Sound Conversations: Listening Across Species
Coming soon!

Sound Conversations places listening at the centre of musical creation. We will facilitate co-creative workshops where participants build listening devices at community space Liebig12 in Berlin. On guided soundwalks through urban ecologies, they listen to their environments to discover and record more-than-human sounds. Steve Williams/drusnoise, Thomas Tichai and Jaqueline Kommers/JaqNoise will develop new electronic compositions from these recordings, continually listening across species. We will perform our co-created compositions at Galiläakirche. Before and during the concert, environmental sensors provide the audience with opportunities for live interaction. Sound conversations between audience, artists and recordings unfold over this participatory soundscape. Artists and audience engage in a Q&A session afterwards facilitated by Laureline Simon from One Resilient Earth.

A selection of works showing our co-creation of music with non-musicians, participatory music making, collaborating with environment, and listening across species. Immersive, engaging, thought provoking, and participatory musical experiences.

Co-creation:

Quantum Inspired Sounds

An evening of live performance featuring quantum physics researchers and sound artists. This unique event featured three new compositions built from the sparks of connection between quantum concepts, data, and sound. All created and performed by collaborations between sound artists and quantum physicists.

Berlin Science Week, Holtzmarkt 25, 2023

Participatory:

Future Soundscapes

This sound art composition features archival sounds from the Lindholmen shipyards, field recordings of the present-day neighbourhood, and a soundscape of the future. The future was co-created with Gothenburg residents who recorded sounds they wanted to hear more of and less of in the future. Performed live by ‪drusnoise‬ at Teater Aftonstjärnans in Gothenburg SE followed by post-show Q&A and discussion circle.

Participatory:

Next Stop 2.0 - Cross Rooms

Participatory youth project in Berlin Marzahn with musicians and artists from Konzerthaus Berlin and ORWOhaus. Exploring the resonant spaces of these landmark buildings of Berlin’s music culture, sounds and spaces were transported across the city and folded into each other for an interactive installation of sound, lights and movement.

Concept and artistic direction: Thomas Tichai, Berlin 2025

Collaboration with environment:

Can you hear the Earth breathing?

Translating CO2 concentration data into sound, plants and bodies as protaganists, audience meditative breath part of the performance. Reimagining climate communication

Listening across species:

There is no separation

Dissolving the boundaries between the human, the other-than-human, and technology, this performance-lecture explores cyborg and hybrid sound with plants, bodies, heartbeats, light, and sound. Creating a liminal space for audiences to attune to unheard sounds and relationships.
