Future Soundscapes Cartesius
When residents are asked what kind of neighbourhood they want to live in they often say they want a quiet neighbourhood. But by quiet, they do not mean silent! Residents want to hear the sounds of children playing, birds in the trees, and glasses clinking at cafés but may not want to hear sounds of traffic, construction, or planes overhead. This project engages local residents in Utrecht to record (on their phones) sounds they want to hear more of and sounds they want to hear less of. The sounds will be collected, categorized, and a soundscape of the future neighbourhood will be created based on the collaborative inputs of local residents.

This sound research project will co-create soundscapes of the future in Cartesius. In partnership with Culture Moves Europe, Acid Solder Club, and Creative Coding Utrecht, researcher and sound artist Steve Williams will lead a public workshop where participants will record sounds they want to hear more of and sounds they want to hear less of. The sounds will be collected, categorized, and a soundscape of the future neighbourhood will be co-created based on the collaborative inputs of local residents. The soundscape will be performed for the public August 15 at CCU.

Workshop 1
Sound recording and co-production
August 8 10:00 - 16:00
Creative Coding Utrecht
Full day workshop where participants will learn about sound and aural architectures. Then go on a self-guided walk through Lindholmen recording local sounds. Then return to the workshop space where we will co-create a soundscape based on the recordings.

Public performance - Future Soundscapes
August 15 20:00
Creative Coding Utrecht
Steve Williams (drusnoise) will perform live with the co-created soundscape in a public performance. Workshop participants will receive a special invitation to experience their co-created work. The performance will also include field recordings of past, present, and co-constructed future sounds of Lindholmen performed with samplers, modular synthesizers, FX pedals, and artifacts like plants, rocks, and found materials from the neighbourhood.
